By Guinness Rider:::::

At the University of Laval, confronted by the host Quebec
Patriotes GAA and inclement weather, Montreal Shamrocks GAA
Football team won the Quebec cup for the second year running.
Shamrocks produced a dominant display from beginning to end,
scoring early and often, tightening the midfield and defense. They
attacked with and without the ball non-stop, pressuring in all
parts of the field. Despite the hosts’ best efforts Montreal
wouldn’t be denied, and the Cup is back on the island for the
third time in four years. A decent crowd was subjected, along with
both teams, to weather that wavered between soggy and miserable,
but the spirit of the game was excellent, hard-fought and nothing
given either way, right up to the last whistle. Special thanks to
our hosts on the day for making a fine event out of it, and
congratulations to the club, the supporters, and the players, who
have not only brought home silverware, but laid a strong
foundation for the GAA’s continued development in the province of
Quebec.

MONTREAL HURLERS SHAKE OFF 35 YEARS OF RUST

17th October 2009

By Guinness Rider

Montreal Shamrocks GAA played their first hurling matches in
roughly 35 years with a double-bill in Portland, Maine on
October 17th, 2009. The newly-formed team were invited down to
the US by hosts Portland Hurling Club Marauders, to take part
in an 8-a-side, three club tournament including the Barley
House Wolves out of Concord, New Hampshire.

Despite being only assembled a mere three months ago, the
Shamrocks gave an excellent account of themselves in the first
match, battling their hosts to a thrilling draw with chances
to win it outright at the end. Portland were well impressed by
the skill level and natural instinct of the side, and they and
Concord were happy to be pitted against the Quebec-based team
that took up the challenge with relish.

So Concord came next, with only a few minutes between matches.
The match started very well for Montreal, but Wolves are a
close-knit, well-drilled and disciplined unit, and started to
pull away in the second half, when match fitness became a real
telling point. Shamrocks may have run out of gas in the end,
but gained many admirers for their determination and some
outstanding individual skill.

All in all, the two American teams were very grateful to have
a new team enter their fray, and there was a lot of talk about
a return engagement next season, with the teams potentially
coming up to Montreal to play. More importantly, the matches
broke a long spell of no official hurling for the city club,
and the enthusiasm shown means there are sure to be more
fixtures and interest in 2010. Winter training and recruitment
up next. Thanks to our opponents, and congratulations to the
players, and the club!

On Saturday July 25th, Montreal Shamrock’s men's team competed in the 7-a-side football tournament being held as part of the Great American Irish Festival in Utica, NY.

In all, 7 teams participated – coming from Rochester, Syracuse, Baltimore, Maryland and Quebec City. The tournament was based on a double-elimination knockout – with two defeats meaning the end of a team’s participation.
The Shamrocks, captained by long-serving member and Roscommon legend Tom Foxe, put in a gallant performance and finished third overall.

Game 1: Montreal v Rochester B
After a sluggish start Montreal soon found their rhythm and slotted over some nice scores. This was backed up by solid defending and good running through mid-field. In the second half Montreal were totally on top and ran out comfortable winners.

Game 2: Montreal v Mason Dixon
This was a very even game between two competitive teams. Montreal took a slender lead into the half-time break. The second half was tit-for-tat and the game ended all square at full time. It was decided on penalties where the Shamrocks lost 3-2.

Game 3: Montreal v Rochester A
This was by far the most bruising of the day's encounters. With 3rd place up for grabs and elimination for the losers, neither team was willing to give up without a fight. Last ditch defending, throwing bodies in harm’s way, hard running and some cool finishing paved the way for a 7 point Montreal victory.

Game 4, Semi Final: Montreal v Mason Dixon
With the elimination of all other teams and Syracuse already in the final, all that was left to be decided was who would face the unbeaten young lads from the nearby University in Syracuse.
After three tough encounters, fatigue finally took effect on a tiring Shamrocks team who lost their way slightly in the closing minutes of this match to lose by 4 points.

Game 5, Co-ed game: Montreal v Rochester
To finish off what was a fantastic day, Montreal fielded a co-ed team with the help of Andrea and Danielle and took on Rochester. This game was played in a very sporting fashion with the girls chipping in with a few scores of their own.

Many thanks to all the players who travelled. There was great heart, commitment and skill on show right throughout the team.

Post-Utica party to follow at Hurleys!

Ottawa Gaels overcame spirited performances from the hosts to claim victory in the Annual Montreal Mens and Ladies tournament last Saturday in St Julie.

In their very first tournament, Quebec Saints claimed the Junior Cup after defeating Quebec City.
Teams from Brampton, Quebec City, Quebec Saints (an Australian Rules team),Quebec City and two teams from Montreal Shamrocks competed for the honours in a very competitive tournament. Atrocious weather conditions meant aesthetic football was at a premium, but the teams defied the elements to give a great display of hard graft, skill and passion in all of the games.

Mens Tournament:

In the mens competition, the teams were divided into two groups of three, with Montreal Shamrock's A team, Brampton and Quebec Saints making up the first group. After overcoming the Quebec Saints, Brampton and Montreal A played out an intense, exciting game which finished in a draw - allowing Montreal to top the group. In the other group, Ottawa defeated Quebec City and the Shamrock's B team to top the group.

In the semi-final stage, Montreal's A team overcame their compatriots from the Shamrocks' B team, while Ottawa weathered strong resistance from Brampton to make the final. The final took place amid heavy rain and wind, with Ottawa's experience proving just enough to prevail in a tight game - on a scoreline of 1-4 to 1-2. Montreal were left to rue some missed chances and some poor final passes but can be proud of themselves after showing great commitment and some terrific skill on the day. The performances of many of the new players augurs well for the team's participation in the rest of this year's matches.

Ladies Tournament:

In the ladies competition, Ottawa Gaels and Montreal Shamrocks played out a tough battle, with Ottawa Gaels coming out on top in the final game despite a typical fighting display from the Shamrocks.
